REPOST // Groom makeup…

Laugh if you will, but Groom makeup is on the up and up and it’s not really surprising.  Groom’s are suddenly realising that they are photographed just as much as their bride, and maybe that pimple that’s reared its ugly head could do with covering!  Once or twice a year, I get a frantic bride telling me that their respective Groom has had a break out, or on one occasion a facial bruise from tripping over.  So after doing the bridal parties makeup, I’ll then rush over to the Groom to help cover whatever needs disguising.

But on some occasions a Groom has outright asked me, through their bride, if I could pop over to their quarters after doing the bridal makeup (in a non weird way!)  Just to even out their complexion, perhaps hide their tired eyes, or just make their eyebrows a bit more filled in…yes even men have got onto the brow trend!

I think Groom makeup is just another natural progression of the wedding preparation stage.  And I for one embrace this confidence in men, to realise they are just as important on the wedding day as the bride x

REPOST // Tips for getting those ‘wedding prep’ photographs just right…

I am completely fascinated by ‘wedding prep’ images.  Whenever I receive pics from photographers I always go to these first as you can’t help but be drawn to these initial glimpses.  Wedding photographers all seem to have this amazing ability to get creative with the placement of shoes, flowers and especially with the wedding bands.  I’ve seen rings placed on strawberries, peaches, on shoe heels and even in a conker shell!  It’s bonkers, but my word does it work!  Here are a few tips for making sure everything is ready for your wedding preps x

1.  If getting ready at your house, parents or even the venue try and make sure the space you have allocated for hair & beauty is kept clear of suitcases and clutter.  Make sure there is no ‘litter’ like left over breakfast or lunch empties, as these do not photograph well in the background.

2.  If it’s in the budget try and source a pretty, chic kimono or elegant bath robe that photographs nicely.  You can always treat the bridesmaids to the same, or slightly different kimono so you all look beautifully paired.  This will look so much better than being photographed in your cosy PJ’s that may have seen better days!

3.  Get one of your bridesmaids or mother to have your shoes, veil or hair piece, jewellery, wedding gown, perfume and wedding rings laid out somewhere safe for the photographer to literally pick up as soon as they arrive to take and photograph.  That way you won’t be rushing around trying to find all these.

Laurel Designs – stationary excellence…

I was introduced to the wonders of Laurel Designs by Jill Chant of Jill the cake maker fame, when I needed stationary designed for a contemporary art deco styled shoot.  And boy did they not disappointment!  From the moment I contacted owner Carol Slark to going and picking up the items, it was an absolute joy.  So creative and helpful I can see why this wonderful team are so well liked with wedding suppliers, and loved by their wedding couples!  The detail in which they design is truly special, leaving nothing to chance and producing everything to a high standard.

I cannot recommend this company enough to couples x

Working with Tasha Newland of Ikonworks Photography

I first became aware of Tasha a couple of years ago through social media, which is always a good way of finding amazing wedding suppliers, and was completely blown over by her work.  Her photography made you sit up and say ‘I want to do that!’  What really still stands out for me was her first front cover for Hampshire, Wiltshire, Dorset Brides Magazine last year.  The cover was divine, just simple makeup done impeccably well by Amazing Face based in Dorset and with a model who just stared right out of the page.  Tasha got the perfect balance of light, composition and design – I still look at it today, finding inspiration for my own work. So when I got the ‘call’ from Tasha asking me to help her on a photoshoot for Wedding Ideas Magazine, I wasn’t going to turn her down!

From the very beginning through various emails discussing the shoot Tasha was so easy going, and was really interested in having your input into the look of the shoot.  She is a real champion for local suppliers, and like me, wants to show clients what is possible – which is a lot!  When I arrived for the shoot at Penton Park the first thing Tasha did was give me a huge hug, which really put me at ease and made me want to do the very best for her and for myself.  And what a great time we all had laughing, coming up with some really stunning images for Tasha and the magazine.

I can’t wait to work with this inspirational lady again x

Jo Hicks Flowers…a wedding florist like no other

I have known Jo for about three years now and I am always surprised at what beautiful creations she has made.  Inspiring me all the time to want to grow this rose, or that peony in my garden just so I can piece together that bit of perfection for myself.  She’s so talented and boy does she know her stuff!  Not just what is trending right now on the wedding flower circuit, but also what’s install for the following year – always keeping her finger on the pulse…which believe me, is a real talent.

Jo is also incredibly nice and you always just want to talk to her forever.  She works hard to understand exactly what you want from your wedding flowers, and puts into words what you can’t express or what you don’t know.  She is also amazing at making suggestions you might not have thought of like beautiful candles, or tiny flower jars attached to chairs down the aisle (my personal favourite)

Jo is just an immensely talented lady, and what’s more she is a champion of local wedding suppliers – the best of all of us x

How I created ‘that’ front cover makeup for Wedding Ideas Magazine Issue 163 (August)

When Tasha of Ikonworks asked me to come up with a bridal design for the front cover of Wedding Ideas Magazine, she told me it all had to be about the eyes.  Powerful, yet delicate with a certain impact you only get if someone is staring directly at you.  Simple, right?  Well actually, yes.  Tasha has a way of making you completely believe in her and the project.  And instills a trust in you to do, well, just what you excel at.  She understands that for her to do her job well, she needs to allow others to do theirs which is an absolute breath of fresh air!

So for the design!  After running a few sketches and doing some online research I had come up with a simple eye design, using soft browns from MAC and lining the eyes with brown and black to give it just another soft edge.  I then just added some false eyelashes for the camera to pick up on, filled in the brows lightly using the same browns through the eye.  I then added several base layers consisting of primers, pore primers, highlighters and strobe cream – finishing with a couple more layers of foundation.

I wanted the blush from the cheeks to almost sweep into the mouth, and form this one continuous look of inviting warmth.   So I used Rosie Huntington-Whitely’s new blusher which goes from a cream to a powder on contact (currently my favourite item in the kit)  Now the lips!  Everyone has been asking me about those lips and what I used…well it was a little of a beposke colour.  Combining MAC’s lipstick in Rebel and with MAC’s Dazzleglass in Funtabulous x
