From the heart…why getting a friend to do your wedding makeup is not always best

Ever since my wedding 5 years ago I’ve been looking forward to seeing my friend get married, and of course I was delighted when she asked me to do the makeup for her bridal party and herself.  Although when she asked me I did advise a little caution, saying that she will feel different towards me than to the suppliers she was paying for, and to make sure she spoke up if she didn’t like what I was designing – as at the end of the day, being a wedding supplier, I knew how to take criticism and take the look in a direction she wanted.  Luckily we came up with a classic bridal look she was happy with, and talked in depth about the bridesmaid looks.  All went well – even when the day before she had a panic about her timings with the hairstylist and myself.

But it got me thinking that if I was just a friend doing the makeup and not an experienced supplier it would have thrown me and I might have even said no, as the change in times meant the difference between a 7:15am wakeup call to a 4:15am wakeup call.  Again something I am used to, but ‘just a friend’ wouldn’t appreciate.

So I could just sit here as a wedding supplier and say professional is best, because of course I am one.  But what you need to ask yourself is underneath the smiles is your friend ready to work under stress, with a time frame and be able to produce a wedding look you can be proud of.
