Aluminium, paraben and cruelty-free deodorants

Firstly, I would like to explain the difference between an antiperspirant and a deodorant. An antiperspirant reduces sweating by temporarily blocking the sweat glands with aluminium salts, whereas deodorants allow you to sweat, while masking the smell. It should be noted that sweat itself doesn’t actually smell – the aroma comes from our skin’s bacteria breaking down the acid in the sweat. Is there good reason to make the switch from chemical antiperspirant to natural deodorant?

One reason is that sweating is natural – your body doesn’t do it for fun, it’s trying to regulate your temperature and keep you cool. Also, you know that yellow stain that’s on the armpits of all your white shirts? That’s the reaction between the aluminium and your sweat. Eliminate synthetic aluminium from your armpit and you’ll eliminate the staining. Another huge reason is that many chemical antiperspirants are made by companies who advocate animal testing, whereas there’s a high chance that any company who makes natural deodorant is going to be cruelty-free.
