Adult acne – what is it, what you can do about it and why you don’t need to feel ashamed

Having ‘adult acne’ as it’s commonly known, can be incredibly upsetting for sufferers.  Especially if you’ve had pimples all through your teenage years, only to have waited for your 20’s hoping it will clear up.  There has actually been a steady increase of adult acne for the last 10 years, which dermatologists are penning ‘pimples meeting wrinkles’.  And while it is most common in people who have oily skin, this isn’t necessarily the case each time, so it’s important to understand what could be causing your adult acne.

The main offender is always hormones!  Fluctuations in hormone levels, such as a menstrual cycle can cause those painful deep cystic spots around the chin, neck and back.  Stress is a big factor, and it can hit you without you even noticing – usually when you’re about to slow down for a while!  Air pollution is another nasty element, and something which cannot be avoided if you live or work in the city.  Air pollution literally puts a layer of crap on your face, and will only be noticeable when you come to wash with a cotton wool pad.

Using the wrong products for your skin type is a big no no.  If you have oily skin then you must use the products labeled ‘for oily skin types’, then same goes for combination or dry skin.  Also, don’t feel as if you have to wash your face too regularly and intensely.  A simple wipe of micellar water and cottonwool is all that is needed to cleanse the skin of makeup and impurities on a daily basis.  Leave the deep cleanse stuff to every 2 weeks, and that’s even if you feel you need to.  Often leaving the skin alone, that includes no picking, is the best policy.

Lastly, don’t feel ashamed about the nature of your skin right now.  Bask in the knowledge that while you may have a few pimples, your skin will age slower due to the higher oil levels, and you will be less wrinkling than your counter parts! x
